Bill is very accurate with his various assessments concerning the trap all
of us fell into early on re: the "ideal layout". Most of us had to modify
our dream layout to fit with reality .. whatever that may be for each of us.
For some, it's constant relocation or kids that moved out, then moved back
(temporarily), or not having sufficient space for any layout, not even a
shelf. Regardless of situation, modeling can be achieved by doing nothing
more than purchasing a RTR car, adding weathering and putting it on a
display shelf. There's nothing "in the rules" stating we are not modeling
if the item doesn't roll on a layout. There are a LOT of people that fall
into this category, hence the popularity for clubs with fixed or portable
layouts.
It boils down to how badly you WANT to model or read or travel or fish or
golf or whatever. A hobby is supposed to be fun, not pressure. We have (or
had) enough of that at work . hobbies are a release from "normal" life but
it's different for each of us. I've been a member of several clubs and
groups over the years and have dealt with all kinds of
looking-down-your-nose attitudes from members who felt THEIR way was the
ONLY way. Sorry, bubba, not so.
I've found that just DOING something hobby-related .. and doing it
successfully (read: to YOUR satisfaction) .. often spurs me on to the next
project, then the next, and so on. If your modeling interests have waned
over the years, you're not alone. Just pick something that's relatively
simple and DO IT. You may be surprised at the results and the enthusiasm it
generates to move forward, whether it's to build more models or build a
layout.
