I had thought about trying a simple stick pin with a sharp bend.  I 
don't know if the convex shape of the pin would be a problem and I'm not 
certain if the size might be a tad too small.  I do know many older 
vehicles had mirrors roughly 4" in dia.

I've had the problem of actually tying to put a load in the box.  I 
would guess that the thickness of the model's sidewall is roughly that 
of the real deal; leaving less room for cargo.
