     You are partially right in that "slugs" get their traction from the main 
generator of the lead unit and are usually concrete filled.
    However in this case, this NS unit is devoid of any traction motors as can 
be seen in a couple views. Bare axles are visible.
There are a bank of lights across the width of the unit, for track inspection 
purposes. Wish I knew more about these unique units, but trust the NS to make 
them butt ugly!
