I finally got around to ordering CDS lettering for some of the AF hopper
conversions I'd started doing and have finished three so far: GN (thank you,
Ken), Rutland, and NKP, which
did the ones that had been sitting around for a while. I am almost ready to
paint and use up my last set (CNJ/CRP--I've got an SHS USRA, but this will be
the offset side AAR) and
have one more in the pipeline that uses the last of my Ace trucks and
conversion bolsters. I'd been able to buy a few more along with some scale
floor conversions and Rex gondola
body castings for both scale and AF trucks, but I am now out of Ace parts again.
I also painted and lettered (CDS MKT set) one of the NMRA special paint PRS
boxcars that were closed out in the fall. The Hal Carstens Susquehanna
Northern was an easy choice,
not because the basic road name and lettering scheme was not a credible
freelance, but the bizarre cartoon/caricature of "The Colonel" on the side
suggested the cutesy side of
model railroading which has always made me queasy (e.g., the Phartz and Howe
baked beans lettering). I tried 91% alcohol to strip the paint but it worked
only so far, and the
lettering itself must have been hot-stamped, as it was the hardest to remove; I
finally gave up and just painted over it using a spray can of the Krylon
rust-color primer I'd bought
at Home Depot (the Krylon I'd bought at walmart was junk--poor nozzle and thick
pigment) and was quite satisfied with the result (could be my standards are not
so high as others
on the list). On the other hand, I've just been using the alcohol on the last
version of the AF hoppers (the one with the clunky truck mounts and holes cast
in the slope sheets and
truly hideous heavy grey paint on the black casting) and it is working very
well at stripping off the crud. The remaining hopper (and three more junkers I
bought only last Saturday
at an area train show) is the intermediate stage where the waxy grey color is
the base color cast into the body, but at least it doesn't need removal.
Haven't tried stripping original/early AF paint, hadn't needed to.
