Good morning S Scale friends, good to see a nice positive thread has taken over
the list again. Ron, I hope you are good to your word and went back to artwork
for decals, you are not going to get much value here.
Dick, I wanted to make another note on your thread. Like you, I review some
kits and when I do, I follow the instructions the best I am able. If possible,
I send a note to the manufacturer with my comments and observations when I am
done with the kit or during if I have a question. I want to be fair and
accurate. I may have noted that during the assembly of one kit I had a key
part that was clearly too small. When I contacted the manufacturer, he looked
into it and said that I was correct and sent me another. he also mentioned
that he had sold a number of the kits over the months and I was the first to
call his attention to that. In other communications with kit makers, they tell
me their joy is in designing and making the kit and they don't enjoy doing
instructions. As many are "basement industries" and they are doing neat things
I appreciate I can be understanding. At a recent PPSSW meeting we had several
kits from one manufacturer, we opened them up and looked inside. One of the
guys looked at all the pieces and the "spartan" instructions and commented that
this kit would be promptly closed up and put on the shelf if it was his.
Sadly, this is too common so perhaps we need to spend a bit of time talking
about things like that here. On the NMRA Regions and Divisions group the topic
is Members Aid and how to help other modelers, it is my concern as the
assistant superintendent of the TCD of the NMRA.
Danny, you are not the only one excited about the SD-45, Walt Jopke's grin was
so big I thought he would break a cheekbone. Thankfully, he wants the Great
Northern Hustle Muscle and the Northern Pacific scheme, I was concerned he
would want a GN Pig Stye blue paint scheme. After years of wanting, I have
changed my layout to more industrial switching... still a pair of Northern
Pacific SD-45's are a must have.
Well guys I gotta go, I came across three folders of very historic photos deep
in the bowels of the museum that I am scanning so they can be added to the data
base and very sadly, I am attending a funeral for a guy who was a basketball
coach for my daughter when she was in middle school. What a wonderful guy, he
spent many hours working with young kids, keeping them in a gym and active, now
he is gone. I was told, he took his own life, if true, I don't want to know or
dwell on it rather to remember him for all the great things he did.
Are we too quick to hate and jump to nasty particularly when behind the
keyboard? Last weekend a survivor of the holocaust past away here in
Minnesota. He often spoke at local schools and his closing comments always
included this; "If you need to hate.... hate-hate.
I will still try to get some photos of the project I am working on for the 2011
project file in between everything.
