When you all get a chance see if you can find the movie "The Station 
Agent".  In the beginning of the movie there is a scene or two just what 
Jim is talking about.  Of course many of us of have seen the parity of 
Budweiser's Real Men of Genius commercial applied to train people.  It's 
a U-tube thing.

  When you say you are a model railroader, the stereotypical response is 
a bit different. They search your face for drool and say something like: 
"Oh, I had toy trains when I was a kid." Think about it this way, in the 
pre-everyone-who-flies-might-be-a-terrorist days, pilots loved to talk 
about aircraft and flying. They would happily show off the cockpit to 
adults who showed an interest. OTOH, railroaders call rail fans 
"foamers"...
