I haven't done the measurements, but I believe the greater throw distance is 
required by the AM turnout because it's designed to accomodate highrail & AF 
flanges, not just because S is bigger than HO.  I think S flangeways for 
RP25 wheels would be little if any amount bigger than  HO.
