The question asked: "What magazines do you READ regularly?" It did not ask
what magazines arrive in my mailbox regularly. In the case of the DISPATCH,
it does arrive regularly, but I quickly scan for scale photos and sometimes
read the captions for those photos. I don't actually read much of anything
in the magazine. I don't have any criticism of the magazine, but my layout
is nearly finished and there is little in any magazine that interests me at
this point.
My layout concept and design is complete and so I do not read those
articles. My benchwork is complete and so I do not read those articles. My
trackwork is complete and so I don't read those articles. Same for backdrop
painting, wiring, DCC systems, making trees, making bridges, building
structures, scratchbuilding, scenery, superdetailing rolling stock and so
forth. For me, it is all finished and I have little desire to change it
or improve upon it. So, to sum it up, I don't take the time to read about
those areas that are complete or nearly complete on my layout. I have no
need or desire to read about things that are already finished and are not
going to be changed. I'd rather spend my time and money elsewhere.
As my layout nears completion (slowly but surely), I find my interests
leaning toward op sessions and how to operate realistically. I am active in
the local OpSig of the NMRA. I am also interested in DCC decoder
testing/evaluation to find out what brand(s) work best for me. And my
interest is also in the area of wireless control panels for the main yard,
computerized Dispatcher panels, and authentic signaling systems. In most
cases, these kinds of technical topics are rarely covered in depth in the
DISPATCH or any other general purpose modeling magazine. I find the Yahoo
Groups a much more efficient way to learn about the things that interest me.
I do use several of the Yahoo Groups for specific purposes when there is a
need to ask a question or learn something new. The answers come quickly and
usually from someone well versed in the topic.
Strange as it may seem, I have cancelled ALL my magazine subscriptions and
ALL my newspaper subscriptions as well. The money saved pays for my DSL
internet connection. I like it that way and have little desire to change
anything. NASG gave me an unsolicited life membership and along with that
comes the DISPATCH. But I do not consider myself a subscriber since I do
not pay for it. The AF pages get turned mighty quickly and so do most of
the advertisements.
The one thing I do read every day on a regular basis is this S-scale Yahoo
Group. Why is that? I honestly don't know, but I suspect much of the
reason is that it has gradually become a daily habit and a way to spend time
along with a morning hot chocolate while I wake up. The chatter here is
amazing and, at times, very entertaining. At other times, I walk away
shaking my head. But that is life in the big city. We are all different
and here is one place where the differences really show. Everyone lets
their hair hang out for others to see. I guess the variety is unbeatable
and maybe that is the attraction.
I still think "Other" and "None" would be more reflective of how I interact
with magazines in general. But if I retake the survey as one person
suggested, dozens of other folks will think I am misleading S advertisers to
spend their money in the wrong place. Personally, I think the S advertisers
are much too smart to do a stupid thing like that in spite of what the
survey might show. Then again, I have been wrong before.
Big storm here tonight so I'd better sign off before a power failure strikes
this neighborhood.
Take care.Ed L.
