A fix perhaps so obvious no else has bothered to mention it: since most really
large hoppers have 36" wheelsets, I ordered some extra sets with my second CD
three-bay last
week. This, of course, will raise the body and would normally mean shimming
the Kadee draft gear down; I took out my previous CD to see what I'd used there
and realized
I hadn't needed to shim because I had simply removed the truck adapter plates
on the kingpins, which puts the car at the correct height without shimming.
The trucks work
perfectly well without the plates (one may wish to trim the ends of the
kingpins to limit vertical play).

These are more modern a prototype than I should probably be buying (as with the
PRS ACF big covered hoppers), but they are quite attractive--sort of a
second-generation
AM product with more and better detail than the early boxcars and hoppers, and
with even Kadee mounting holes (I suspect the earlier floor castings were
designed for
either their proprietary dummy couplers or Kadee #5's with the center mounting
hole--they are a pain to drill and tap for Kadee #802's).
