How much modelwork have you done over the years? Cars. ships, planes, etc.  
This can influence what you might try without getting in over your head.

What city or area are you in?  There might be someone, in scale, or high rail 
in the area to guide you.

  Well, i plan to creat a layout of my own, not trying to reproduce an existing 
line. Things i'd like to include a logging camp operation, a city/town, some 
bridges, water/river

  i was thinking of having layers of track with some turnouts behind the 
scenes, so i can switch trains, etc.

  i have scenics and vehicles for different eras as ell - 20's-30s ; 40s-50s; 
60's-70's and modern

  what do i need [and how do i set it up] to actual;ly RUN the trains?
  i've been reading this list and the S-Train list for awhile and i see people
