There is an article in February 2001 Model Railroader, pages 90-91
"Fail-safe Turnouts," specifically Shinoharas.  Main concern is the metal
strip under the points which needs to be removed and replaced with a PC
Board throw rod.  Other modifications are discussed per Ken's comments
below.

When I have some spare time, I do some maintenance on the 6's and 8's adding
in a new throw bar, powering the diverging rails and isolating the frogs. It
is not necessary but I think it makes them a bit more DCC friendly. Again
Dave does not do this, he just keeps his track and turnouts clean. What a
concept! Dick's point is also good on the Tomalco. these are good turnouts
but you should check all of the critical dimensions.
