David,

I have a couple of the SSLS 6-wheel passenger trucks that I acquired and
assembled years ago that run flawlessly. They were assembled without
modification and run just fine. The original Bakelite bolster has not been
a problem for me. I wouldn't try looser springs because I think the reason
that they run so smoothly is the nice spring action and the way the trucks
are equalized. I would recommend that you check the gauge on the older
wheel sets (or replace them) as standards have changed since Claude
originally offered these trucks way back in the 70's.
