This is going to be a little ramble that ends up being about the PRS Covered
hopper. My dates and time line may not be completely correct but no names
have been changed..

I wound up being a part of a private somewhat impromptu layout tour during
the 1991 Syracuse convention. It was me Tall Paul and his son that was about
12 at the time, Billy & Danny Click who was a yeean as well, and Roy Pinch
(who I think I can correctly say is the Late Roy Pinch) The man's name was
Bob I think. He have a good sized Chevy window van. He drove us around God's
country rural New York for about 8 hours to various train related places and
some layouts.

Roy Pinch talked **constantly**. We were all very happy later in the day
when he fell asleep. The first stop was East Syracuse Station. There was a
private business car on the siding. Ironically the owner was there and let
us in for a look. After we "stayed our welcome" I was stuck being the last
one out - behind Roy. Roy was truly bent on playing some kind of tune on the
man's diner chime. I looked at him as did the owner in complete shock and
told him to put it back in the rack. I could not get out of there fast
enough.

If you will remember Walt Danylak was an investor in the PRS covered
hopper. He got the first batches to sell. He had undec cars at 1990
Pittsburgh to sell but no lettered cars. One of the stops on our 1991 tour
was an American Flyer layout. Sitting off to the side was a New York Central
PRS covered hopper. It was the first I had seen or even heard about that was
sold as lettered. Unfortunately for this car the owner suffered from a
**severe** lack of glue control using liquid cement to assemble it. The
lettering was in literal streaks running top to bottom down the sides of the
car almost making the NYC Oval look like a Keystone! Further it has American
Flyer passenger car trucks on it with truck spacers about 3/8" long made
from copper tubing putting the car towering over its proper ride height.

Since Danny, Billy and I were the only "scale" guys on the tour we were
considering on "rescuing" this poor mistreated car. We were pretty much
bored to tears at this point anyway so we may have stared at the car in
disbelieve - maybe a little too long. The owner looked over at us, standing
in a semi-circle possibly gawking. Out of the blue he broke us up by saying
"That is one of them new hopper cars from Walt Danylak. Do you have any
yet?" Danny said "No, how do you like it? He said, "It's a nice car, but it
really doesn't run very good!" it took every ounce of our being to not laugh
at that moment.

I told you it would be a story about the PRS Covered hopper!
