No it does not spoil it for me. I love the 4449 in its Daylight colors. Have been tempted to buy the S scale Daylight in brass a couple of times. My mother and father road the Coast Daylight while the Indianapolis was in dry dock at Mare Island in November 1944. My father bought a deck of SP playing cards with a painting of a Daylight train on the cover and on each card. He signed it and dated it. It is a prize possession that my mother surprised me with a short time before I left to ride the World's Fair Daylight in 1984. I think I have the photo of the aerial shot crossing a bridge over a river in Oregon. This was the first day of the World's Fair Daylight operation. They had the photos on sale on the train the next day. Since you mentioned painting a Daylight in the Southern Green and Gold, I will share something else crazy. You may have experienced the kind of wild rumors that sometimes get started among railfans. My first trip behind the 4449 was between Atanta and Alexandria (VA) in 1976. Southern had to move the loco from Birmingham where the loco had been serviced to catch up with the Freedom Train in Washington, so they made it a steam excursion. Waiting at the station in Atlanta, some of the railfans were excitedly spreading the word that Southern had painted the loco green and gold just for that trip. Of course that was just pure fantasy. It was beautiful in the American Freedom Train paint. I have now put aside the idea of operating a Daylight train on my layout. I need to thin my collection about 80% to get it to a practical size. I am concentrating on having a railroad limited to Southern, L&N, NC&St, and Tennessee Central. Even that may be more trains than I will ever run at one time. I look forward to seeing the Daylight photos at the auction. Is the auction limited to S gaugers? - Earl Henry In a message dated 6/9/2011 11:24:09 P.M. Hi Earl....One of the photos was taken while the train was parked in the Sacto RR station. It is a closeup of the front of the loco. One other is an aerial shot while the entire train is on a bridge crossing over a reservoir up at/near Lake Shasta, CA. One other is a close-in shot of the train parked at the Portland, OR RR station. And the last is another aerial shot of the train crossing a river on a bridge up in Oregon somewhere. Nice photos for sure. But the loco is orange/black instead of green/gold/silver. Doesn't that spoil it for you?
