Hi Mike; I don't think anyone was making fun of these models. While I would not pay $800 for a custom painted and weathered version of a $40 freight car, I agree they are really superbly weathered. He knows his market, and since he is selling through Ebay clearly it is the market driving the prices, not the builder setting a high initial price.
I would certainly like to learn more about his techniques. I know I've seen an article about building his layout (which is also extraordinary), maybe in O Scale magazine. Pieter E.
