Andy, Not long after those 0-8-0's were introduced, I did happen to work on one of those trucks. Curiosity got the best of me and I tried to flex those leaf springs and it immediately broke. Another club member did the same thing (something about great minds thinking alike-not). Anyway I replaced the entire truck with one of the SSL&S Andrews trucks. It ran that way for several years until we finally located the correct replacement springs.
Some years ago several of the Houston bunch took a field trip from Houston, north to the woods of East Texas to visit some of the engines on display as well as, the Moscow, Camden and St. Augustine. We noticed that a couple of the engines didn't have matching tender trucks, journal box lids or even wheel sets. Since these engines were used entirely on company property they weren't subject to ICC or any other regulatory agency, so they used what they had lying around that worked. So if you're running branchline operations or switch engines mix and match whatever works and adds some character.
