I guess I should chime in here.  I get this question all the time when I
sell my speakers.  Sound is subjective and only you can determine which is
best.   Is there a right way or wrong way?  Not really.
The main thing is to be sure that the speaker is sealed within an enclosure.
Always test your speaker set up in your train room and not at a work bench
or hobby store.  You need to know how the locomotive sounds in your
operating environment and not your buddies.
Try it both ways and see how it sounds on your layout, then you will know
what is best for you.
