Ed, I stopped in to see and hear the Soundbug decoder at the Digitrax
booth. I have a friend who is a sales guy for them. It's basically an
'okay' sounding unit. I would place it in the MRC catagory. Since it's
about half the price it works for many, plus additional sounds can be
downloaded as needed, I understand.
Indeed at the Digitrax users meeting at the convention, A J stated that
it's a "good sound" but they are not competing with Soundtraxx's unit.
A more interesting thing that hasn't been mentioned here is a joint
venture between Digitrax and Soundtrax in the sound area. By using the
transponding feature of most Digitrax decoders along with the Tsunami
decoder. It works with a series of heavier base sound from speakers
mounted under the layout that follow the engines. It works best with
diesels and their low rumbling frequencies. The higher pitched sounds
like break squeal, bells and whistles are still heard from the engine's
smaller speaker. The Soundtraxx booth featured a demo of it. I don't
know where the sound decoder is located--engine or under the layout, but
I assume in the engine/tender.
