Hi Peter --
You, of all people, should know what it takes to do what Steve did because
you do it too. He is also your neighbor in the Houston area! You are
both to be emulated...
For my FNF, I finally got into those pesky, non-rolling SWM drop equalized 6
wheel passenger trucks to see what I could do to improve their rolling
qualities. I bought a pair second hand, unused, and started with those.
I first had to re-solder a loose anti-sway brace, but that has nothing to do
with rolling. Once I knew it would hang together, I made sure that the
equalizers and journals were free to move in their pedestals. This
required moving the clasp brake shoes away from the equalizers and opening
the jaws where the equalizer passed through the pedestal in one case. Next
I adjusted the tram of the truck to ensure the wheels ran straight and weren’t
binding on the rails. Then I checked each wheelset for free turning, no
rubbing on anything, and found a couple that were bound up end to end – the
axle was rubbing at the ends in the journal. A CAREFUL prying of the
pedestal away from the wheels solved that. A bit of hand rolling on the
track helped to seat the bearings. A drop of Labelle 102 gear oil, and
they were off to the races! I then tackled a painted car that I got used,
and after applying the same tricks, it went from rolling maybe six inches
after a push to rolling many feet. I am a happy camper!
Hope all had a good week!
