Instead of trying to figure a way to hold the centre of the Heljan turntable in 
a depressed position, I'd be doing the opposite, and bracing it in its unloaded 
position..  In fact the first time I ran my Overland RS-18 onto my Heljan 
turntable I was shocked to see the centre dip about a scale foot.  I had 
visions of the plastic lip weakening and breaking way from the pit wall, 
sending the whole structure down through the hole in the benchwork (along with 
a brass engine) to the floor below.  I braced mine with a single small piece of 
1X2  just offside of the centre pivot.  It works just fine and I now know my 
locos are safe.

      I continued to work on the Heljan Turntable conversion. . I'm finding 
that turning it manually there is no binding whatsoever. I'm more inclined to 
want to keep it in the depressed state so that there is no misalignment when 
it's light. I need to think about how to accomplish this.
