There's been a lot of discussion the last year on the OGR 2R Forum about 
battery power. One prolific modeler whose articles appear frequently in OSN has 
switched entirely to battery power with his 1st install being a 44 tonner. The 
batteries are contained in the loco and he gets an hour or better of 
switching/run time per charge. Not a lot of time for mainline running I'll 
admit, but certainly a good start. 

It seems battery technology has advanced to the point that self contained 
battery operation is possible in smaller locos and I think this would include 
"S". Actually, battery power has been possible for years if you didn't mind a 
tag-along battery boxcar to house the batteries. 

The hope is that one of the major manufacuters (Bachmann, Lionel, MTH, Atlas, 
Etc., will jump in and the technology should advance substantially.  

The thought of simplfied wiring and lack of shorts sounds very interesting 
since I'm working up plans for a layout.
