I find it amazing we spent a ton of money on engines, track, buildings, etc.
but when it comes to ballast, many look for something cheap. This is no dig at
anyone, just a general statement, as I see this all the time on many train list
I am on. The worse has to be the use of cat litter.

I highly recommend anyone try some ballast from Classic Trains.

the editor of Classic Toy Trains, as it is not a scale publication, told my he
loves my ballast as my ballast is a true S product and ballast really makes the
layout.

I see someone selling engines on this list for like 1800.00 but to spend a few
100 on ballast? Why not?

www.classictrains.com Maybe they might send you a sample.

Some years ago, Scenic Express used to re-sell Smith and Sons ballast, I really
liked the product a lot. Scenic Express switched suppliers, so having the Smith
and Son's contact info is really handy, thanks!

Woodland Scenics is crushed walnut shells, died for color. They tend to cling
more with static and float when wetted, but can be fine with careful work. It
is also more uniform color, which is not necessarily a good thing.
