It seems as though the choice of ballast is much like the choice of
cars--some cost more, some have many colors but certainly most will get
us there.

My first experience in junior high was with bird gravel, Weldwood
powdered glue and some gray powdered paint. I wet it in place and it
worked for that time period.

When I started my present layout, I bought some long forgotten brand of
ballast in a medium gray. After wetting much of the color left the
product. Before it was completely dry, I tried to remove it--man what a
mess. It sort of all balled up like a popcorn ball, so I finally let it
dry and then scrapped it out and overlaid it with something else.

And talk about cheap. My wife and I were once given a "mad ball" with
some company logo on it. I finally got tired of it and cut it open to
see what it was made of--looked like Woodland Scenics medium brown, so I
used it. So I stole my wife's and ballasted about 6' of track. So
that's what guys who don't have IRA's do to save money!
