I've only been in S scale for less than two years, but most commercial
lumbering models seem to be Sn3, and as with most things, the selection of
prototypes
is more limited than in other scales (no disconnects that I am aware of). PBL,
not surprisingly, has produced most of the Sn3, not only Shays (so far
apparently
mostly WSL prototypes) but a WSL Heisler and WSL ex-Swayne log buggies. Rio
Grande Models offers WSL and Swayne prototypes, including several of the
cabooses. V&T (now owned by Keith Wiseman) offered several variations of kit
to rebuild the MDC HO Shay for S and Sn3, as well as a conversion kit for
the AHM Heisler. Backwoods Miniatures had a fairly expensive (although not to
be compared with PBL locomotive prices) brass kit for an Sn3 small Climax,
which I believe is now discontinued. I just bought a Heisler conversion kit
(now I need to find a reasonably-priced AHM) and am awaiting eagerly an Overland
Mich-Cal Sn3 two-truck Shay I just bought from another list member.
There are doubtless other lumbering models in S that I've either overlooked or
wasn't aware of.
