"Bob, I have one that works on my mainline. I had a nasty little vertical
curve on an entrance to a curve that a few of my cars would not take every
time. I installed a short guard rail on the inside rail at the trouble spot
and cured the problem. I have since corrected the vertical curve, but it
does/did work. Danny Click"

 

I can assure that guard rails do work on model railroads as well as on the
prototype, not only on bridges but at other places you would most likely
never expect to see a guard rail.  They sure do come in handy on my
Jefferson Central track that has been in use for 40 some years. At times
over the years I do have to  replace sections of track, but like the real
railroads, only when I really have to!
