I wonder if you are speaking of the Evans RBL, sometimes known as the Blue 
Island Reefer.  There is a three-part article in Mainline Modeler - July, 
August, September 1996.  The drawings show a peaked roof and no running 
board.

They are said to have been made from 1969 - 1977.  "Modern" for S gaugers.
