Bob:
You and I toured an anthracite mine near Centralia, PA, on the way home from 
the NASG Convention in Syracuse in 1981.  I hope that is not the meaning of 
"several years"...! <GRIN> 

BTW, I think the guide was practicing a bit of hyperbole about hardness.  
Anthracite is definitely the hardest coal but there are many minerals harder 
than Anthracite before you get to diamonds.  Check out a Mohs hardness scale...

Beyond the Reading, the DL&W based "Phoebe Snow" and "Route of Anthracite" PR 
campaign on that hard coal's tendency to burn with very little smoke, soot or 
ash.
