A friend of mine has a large O scale layout, 30 x 50' and he used exclusively, 
Upson board or Upsonite. It is another paper/woodchip based material, but is 
uniform thickness and comes in at least three thicknesses. He beveled the edges 
to 45 degrees, kerfed it for curved roadbed. I think, not sure, he coated it 
with some kind of sealer as it has a thin paper covering on both sides. He 
handspiked all his trackwork.  Upsonite is available from Niagara Fiberboard. A 
Google Search for it brings up a description and qualities of it.
