In my early Seabee days ( Summer 1969 ) I had a Material Handling Crew at
the warehouses in Davisville, RI. One Monday morning we reported to find a
PRR boxcar, with liquid dripping out the doors. There were cards on
every corner of the car ( PC Daze ) "DO NOT HUMP", SO the PC boys humped her
BOTH ways, apparently. One of the "Sand Crabs" (civilian workforce) brought
a front end loader up to the door, placed the bucket under the door as it
was opened, and a mass of glass, soggy cardboard and H J HEINZ products
slowly oozed out the door and into the bucket. When it was close to full, the
door was closed, bucket dumped into a roll-off that had appeared and whole
process started again. We figured about 25 % of the load was salvaged, PC
took a "bath", and supplies for the Dew Line were delayed. EVERY
delivery after that was by truck.
