All,

For about 20 years of my S Scale life, I lived the dream/delusion of wanting
"Wildwood to Pittsburgh". As previously mentioned, life, finances and the
acquisition of an actual basement really changed things up drastically. The
dream now had a real cinderblock box it had to fit into! We all want lots of
the real thing, faithfully modeled of our favorite road/region/town, but
typically get/build something substantially different if anything at all
gets built.

My reality check smacked me into "get trains running". That is pretty much
the **only** goal. With my recent building flurry I am well within reach of
doing just that to some extent on my new layout by the end of the year. That
will be about a year total as I flopped the former "DeWitt Yard" on my
basement floor on New Year's Day trying to see what I wanted and where to
start. I did not make a resolution but have stuck to it as much as possible
while doing life's other things.

Last night I stopped into a friend's house to see the progress on his
layout. It was determined that I might have not been there in 4 years. It is
HO and possibly the best researched and best executed Altoona ever in model
form. Besides the layout excel lance was the complete mental discipline Ken
stuck to for many years in order to get to this point. He chose a **much**
smaller overall region to model then the typical "Wildwood to Pittsburgh".
Ken told me once but I think it is about 20 actual miles of prime Mighty PRR
mainline that is being modeled to the utmost fidelity sans space
restrictions. Further, given the massive variety of PRR rolling stock
available in HO, if it did not run through Altoona in 1949, Ken does >not
have it.< For me and I would guess most of us here with our constant "need
something new" drive is a massive task in itself. In my mind the more you
can stay focused on a theme the better you WILL succeed at the goals set.

Tying it all together, rule number one is there are no rules. Run want you
want. Andre CAN do whatever he wants. There is really no need for the mental
consternations. Make the trains and scenery look great. Make the track
mechanically sound. Everything else will fall in place or not really matter.
Of course I will have a heavy PRR theme but will also have some PRSL, B&O,
and Reading at the same time. I will also plan a "B&O Day" to get Dan V. to
drive north!

Thank You,
Bill Lane
