LIONEL produced a Standard Gauge "track scales" ( 441 Weighing Station
1932-36 ) many years ago that was close to "right on" in comparison to the
scales on the Reading & Columbia ( PA ) line at the Columbia end. The scale
was a "run thru" in that the car was positioned on the scale in the train
and weighed, w/o uncoupling, normally. A dispute between Conrail and the
then owner of the line, the Middletown & Hummelstown RR, apparently was the
reason Conrail CUT the connection to the R & C in Columbia. The R & C is
now owned by one of the two scrap dealers in town, after years of political
wrangling, to prevent the sale to this person.
NS reinstalled the switch, as soon as ownership changed.
AS an aside, the Boro of Columbia removed tracks owned by the railroad AND
the PUC forced them to reinstall the tracks at Boro expense when they lost
the fight to force the railroad out of town. Only the taxpayers really
lost.

Sounds like it might be realistic to add a scale then figure out ways to
use it later or just have it there if needed. Would a shortline usually have
the scale on a main or yard track that could also be used for other
purposes or would they normally dedicate a track just to the scale? Would a
shortline scale track have to be a double ended track or would they sometimes

install a scale on a spur if they didn't need to use it a lot? ..DaveBranum
