I have no complaints about the appearance of the AM FP7s. They run so smoothly. I have decorated a pair in the L&N blue and cream and they really look great to me without any modifications. In a perfect world, The Southern units would have doors without the lower headlight since Southern never had the lower headlights on any of their F units. But that is a minor problem compared how much the introduction of the AM FP7 made to the S modeling world. That was a time when we could not get many locomotives other than American Flyer or expensive brass. It was the perfect diesel for the S market when it was introduced. Nobody complainted then and I sure am not going to complain now. Let me confess that I ordered an FA-FB-FA set before I owned an FP7, but the operating characteristics are virtually identical. My units were DC. My only DC power pack at that time was for N Gauge. I was amazed that one of the diesels would run on that N gauge power pack, and it ran at reasonable speed. Then I added a second unit and a third and could hardly believe that N gauge power pack would run the FA-FB-FA consist. And the units ran so smoothly. I would still be running these on DC power if DCC had not come along a little later. - Earl Henry, Nashville In a message dated 9/11/2011 8:35:40 P.M. Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes:
aMEN! Tom My original AM FP-7's and derivatives are still running just fine performing daily service. Maybe they're not as exquisitely detailed as some may desire, but they more than make up for that in smooth reliable operation. I'm just glad I'm not as cognizant of their so-called "shortcomings". I probably wouldn't enjoy them near as much. Besides none of that is so obvious in an operating context. I still have my two FP-7 shells and plan to keep them. The CGW had two FP-7 units, and I have two to do up in CGW livery.
