Nobody will argue with the work Brooks has done with his layout or to
the place he is in the modeling world. However, Brooks runs SHS steam
that is DCC controlled and on track that looks better than the old Flyer
(or similar), plus Kadee type couplers. Add in some really great
scenery, well built structures plus additional railroad flavor and you
have a great system.
Brooks also had an earlier layout that used modified AF engines, some AF
coal loaders that was also a memorable layout. However this newer
version is much better for my eyes.
All in all, the price, unless your going for the high-end RR or PBL
engines really shouldn't be a major factor. So the price of scale locos
in his case is about the same, track is about the same and I'm sure that
scenery doesn't care what style layout it's on or how much it cost.
My feelings are that many hi-rail guys are part collector, part horse
trader, and lastly part modeler. Many purchase items only to store in
the closet so they later can sell--MIB! Of course the Scale guys do
that too, but in different ratios. I had no problem cutting into my
first brass engines, modifying and painting as needed. Back in my AF
daze, I also modified, converted and weathered my items--some that would
be considered collectible today. Since I modified mine, it just made
the rest rarer!
