I just received my copy of Brooks Stover's new softcover book about his Buffalo
Creek and Gauley model railroad. I've only had a few days to look over the
book but already this is one of my favorite model railroad books.
Not only does this book do an entertaining job of covering the "how I built it"
story of the layout, but the sections on modeling philosophy are particularly
instructive. For us S-scalers, the book also nicely describes Brooks' gradual
evolution from AF to scale modeling, and presents some good examples of how a
specific prototype can be modeled, even in a minority scale with limited
commercial model choices.
For me, the most enlightening sections read so far involve the concepts of
capturing the character of the prototype without getting lost in the details,
and the value of consistency of detail and finish in our models.
I know I am going to enjoy reading this book in even greater detail. You can
find ordering information for "Modeling the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad" on
