Hi Bill --

I attended a very interesting clinic at the NMRA regional meet in Flagstaff on
the use of JMRI products. Included in their suite of applications are
operations and inventory programs. These are FREE. Production versions end
in an even number, test versions in an odd number after the decimal point. It
is recommended that you only use the production versions unless you are an
expert computer programmer. This software is generated a lot like Wikipedia
entries with a core of programmers, but open to anyone to make changes, so it
is always changing, mostly for the better. From what I saw at the clinic, it
was originally started by guys who were NOT model railroaders and so as the use
of the software became more common, more user useful changes were made, and now
it is supposedly very easy and useful. Some aspects are still undergoing
refinement, mostly in regard to inventory/operation pairing. You can get to
the site by Googling jmri or go directly to jmri.sourceforge.net .

Have fun!

Subject: {S-Scale List} Re: Is this the S scale group?

This list is my daily reading Digest every morning, and quite frankly I
don't get upset at anything any one writes on this list as long as it
pertains to model railroading in S scale. This list is for S Scale modelers,
however all the names (Flyonel, American Flyer and others) mentioned are
related to S scale modeling in our discussions, like it or not, GROW UP!.

Recently the conversation has been getting out of line, some of it jokingly,
heck, I too enjoy humor, even about me.

But to see cussing, belittling and knocking fellow model railroaders is
completely out of line and the offenders should be monitored.

Com'on, and cut out the political stuff, let's get back to running S scale
trains and talking about our experiences.

I have a question; How many modelers on the list use the soft-ware program
Rail-Op ?

If you run operations on your model pike, what do you use?

Perhaps you made up an operating system just for your model railroad, (model
railroad solitaire?) tell us about it.

I know of one where the modeler uses playing cards and it works pretty nice.

Matter of fact his system made RMC several years ago.

How do you inventory your equipment?

That I do though Microsoft Excel, every piece of equipment I own is on Excel
and I can go to it [in boxes or on the layout] when I please.

This is pretty darn handy when I need a model or a kit that may want to
build, photograph or research.

Sure would like to hear your thoughts and please, give our moderators a
break, get back to running and building trains, S scale trains.

"S"incerely,

Bill Fraley
