  Subject: {S-Scale List} Speeders

The East Broad Top has narrow gauge speeders running at all events (for
  thin people)

  John Armstrong

One or two of the "Speeders" are simply the trailer style flats with "Hit
or Miss" engines on them. To reverse at the end of the run ( track now
goes from the yard to almost the track cutoff at the PA Turnpike ), the
operator shuts the engine down, cranks it in reverse and off they go.

The most elaborate "Speeder" is semi-enclosed, completely rebuilt and has a
1928 "Nash" engine for power. The interesting thing about the engine,
there is NO mechanical oiling system, the operator is supposed to remove
the valve cover and pour motor oil on a felt pad to lubricate the engine.
The restoration crew figured that out, the former Manager, Stanley Hall
related that in order to start the engine in years gone by, they had to
"hammer" the valve stems loose. Believe that unit is Number 3, they did save
the
parts they re-fabbed to rebuild it, they are/were hanging on the shed
wall. Larry Freeman and others from the neighboring trolley museum led the
  effort.
