Bob,

You're right on. While some scalers wouldn't mind appearing alongside hi-rail
layouts the narrow gauge camp would never go for it. In my opinion some of the
best modeling in S is narrow gauge. For me, scale modeling at 1:64 is scale
modeling. Wide, standard or narrow so what. I'd almost go so far as to
include the military and ship modelers at 1:64. Have you seen some of those
dioramas the military guys put together? Or the weathering effects? I'd take
that any day. Much to learn from the world of scale modeling at 1:64.

To continue, my thoughts are that the HI-rail folks with scale-like
layouts can easily blend with many of the better scale layouts (likewise
an ordinary hi-rail layout with AF track, stock Plasticville and green
painted plywood is probably equal to some scale layouts that never seen
to get off the ground). However when you add in the narrow gauge
mixture, it's harder to blend in with those guys in most cases--they
don't want to know hi-rail and I assume the opposite is also true. I've
had AF guys come to visit and can't figure out why I don't have a AF
coal loader to load my hoppers!
