The Great Plains Northern Terminal Railroad was open on our regional
Fall Tour on Friday evening for a few hours and then again on Saturday
afternoon. Our Fall Tour spans 6 weekends starting in October and ends
in a couple of weeks.

We had a less than normal crowd for both sessions this year, but with so
many layouts open the possible guests are divided to what can be
comfortably driven in the time span. A couple of things that made it
all worthwhile was that about half the guests were 'first timers' and
one grouping was a dad with a couple of young boys. These kids had
their own layout and actually knew a great deal about railroading. One
carried his I-pad with photos of his layout that were super well done.
Each also did some video on my layout. So if these kids stay with it,
the hobby will survive in some form.

We did have great weather with the windows open Friday evening, but
Saturday brought high humidity, so I had to use the AC unit. I think
both sessions went fairly well, with some minor problems with one
engine/turnout location bringing some derailments that I hadn't seen
before--time for the section gang to take a look! Only one engine
derails there and that same engine doesn't seem to derail at any other
location! Just to be on the safe side, I ran in the opposite direction
on Saturday. Peter Vanvliet helped me Friday evening with his hand on
the throttle, while Ron Rohr reported for duty mid afternoon on
Saturday. I find that you almost need to be able to greet guests and
answer questions and have other trusted operators do that job.

Post tour involved in getting things back to normal--messing up my
workbench, getting some of those in-progress projects back out and
correcting a couple new problems. I did spot a 1 inch "pinch" on a
siding that contained two curved turnouts that I had laid just before
out 1989 NMRA national. So I don't know if things are moving just a
little or that I've been lucky for this many years! It was cured on
Sunday--those things bother me!
