Mark, in addition to what Pieter said, I would like to add that it is my understanding that some individuals buy products that they don't need just to support a manufacturer's or individual's project. Some projects need a commitment of X number of items to be a "go", so some who have a bit of extra money to spare will buy something just to help get to that number. Some manufacturers/individuals don't want to maintain an inventory, so it must all be sold as soon as produced. With this in mind, if you can't find something, always ask this list, because someone may be "maintaining an inventory" for future sale. I got several items that way even though they are "no longer for sale".
As Pieter said, sometimes the hunt for something is part of the fun. When I built my RS-1 engine late last year, I got frustrated because I couldn't find any S-scale decals for it. I dug a bit further and sent some e-mails. What I learned was that a number of decal manufacturers who only list HO- and maybe N-scale decals on their web sites are more than willing to make a special run for S-scale (some require a minimum of two-sets purchase, which is no big deal). So, my frustration of not finding ready-to-run S-scale decals led to my discovery that I can have just about any decals I want in S! Information like that may be "common knowledge" to the "elders" in our scale, but that information may not be available to "newbies". That is part of the reason why I maintain my web site; to help people find info about our scale. Pretty much anytime I learn something, I share it on the site to hopefully be of use to someone else. - Peter.
