I use the same process to great success. A light gray paint for weathered wood
or something like PolyScale dirt for more natural wood as an undercoat. 120
grit sandpaper, emery boards or those German abrasion tools P-B-L or Micro-Mark
sells all work great for exposing the undercoat each with a slightly different
effect. Experiment to find the one you are looking for or combine them. I've
even applied multiple undercoats and exposed them in layers for weathering
effects on buildings. You can blend it all together with weathering powders or
an alcohol/india ink wash. In your case, black top coat, both powders and
washes really wont show but they will do a nice job of blending the exposed
areas. You could also just wash the exposed areas with a very thin version of
your black paint if you didn't want things to looked "weathered" just worn.

Over the primer, put a yellowish wood color, such as Testor's "wood." Over
that put your black paint. Let everything dry thoroughly--days or a week if
necessary. Then with some fine steel wool or sandpaper remove some of the
black to represent wear.
