I helped a friend remove the electronics from one a few years ago when he was looking at converting it to scale. From what I remember, all wheels pick up power from the track. Each driver had a spring-loaded wiper on the back of the wheels. The tender picks up power separately for the sound unit. The only connection between the two was the optical chuff sync.
