On my old layout, sometimes I ran rear helpers using an engineer for each
(steam) locomotive.  I remember controlling the rear helper watching the
coupler slack action.  It was fun, especially on a 3.5% grade.  New layout
is that far along yet.

IMHO, if you are going to have some fun with mid train and rear end
locomotives as helpers, you need the slack to 1) Have some idea where the
"push/pull" point is, and 2) To keep from tearing the train apart when you
start it...
