Last night had the first trial operating session. Small point to point layout
and we operated only half the layout. Was concerned that there wouldn't be
enough to do to fill two hours with only 4 industries, a scale track and 2 yard
tracks.
Granted it was a first run, but my two visitors took almost 2 hours to pickup
8 cars and setout 8 cars, weigh 10 hoppers and work 2 arriving and departing
trains. Found one switch needing additional feeders. Required bell ringing
and whistling at road crossing, and bell ringing when two locos running on same
track and had to add caboose to end of train, not train to caboose.
I feel lucky to be modeling the transition period in S. I have every type
loco I need. The only freightcar types I wanted and don't have is the
fishbelly hopper recently canceled by SHS and a 1932 boxcar. This isn't a
complaint, but a note that I've been buying since 1996 and only missing one or
two cars isn't bad at all. I wish Don T.luck and if worse comes to worse I
think I can cut down a PRS 1937 boxcar for the 1932 and scratchbash a fishbelly
hopper. But first more S scale layout to build. Don, I'm going wait two or
three years before I scratchbash that fishbelly just in case.
Just one last thanks. The obscure Southern coal branch I'm modeling had two
F-3's arrive in 1947 numbered 4171 and 4172. My two SHS Southern F-3's came
from the factory numbered 4271 and 4172. Wouldn't have happened in HO or N.
