It's mostly because O stuff is a lot more visible and available than S stuff.
O has a long history and tons of scale stuff on the used market while S is
quite hard to find in most locations. Compare the number of O auctions on ebay
to the number of S auctions to get an idea of the discrepancy in numbers. Add
to this the fact that Athearn ,Intermountain, Red Caboose ,and atlas make O
stuff and that most HO modelers are familiar with these names so they naturally
learn toward them when moving up.
Now that O has built a big bubble of johnny come lately modelers I think we'll
see a shakeout of the weak hands as many start to realize that O is just too
big for most layout spaces. If they can't stomach the thought of returning to
HO or of just quitting model railroading they might be ripe picking for the
forward looking manufacturers. It seems that atlas could profit from a rotation
from O to S now that they've saturated the O market? ...DaveBranum
