I think this bus situation is one where the old "S scale rule"
applies...if at any time a new product is introduced, buy it, because
you might just need it sometime! Never depend on an inventory or
somebody continuing in business until you need it.

As Ed mentioned, Hoquat made two resin bus models.
Peter Newguard made a 1/64 1930's bus, about $70 for the kit. It's
also OOP for some years.
A bus modeler in Florida had solid plaster bus models, mostly HO but
some 1/64 as well. Also vanished. Possibly the name was Robert's Model
Transportation.
Currently there are a couple of toy diecast busses available. One is a
"city" bus, often painted for Police use, with a button on the back
that makes it light up. A bit oversize for S, but a start.
Some toy stores also have a flat-front school bus that would be
re-worked and painted to look like a transit bus.
Some old Tootsie Toy busses might also work; with paint, new wheels
and glass added they wouldn't be too bad. Antique shops, train shows
and Ebay are your best bet for these.
