Although they are recuperating from a fire. I had one in N-scale. It was
definitely a master-craftsman type of project. I also scratchbuilt one
in N-scale. I used the Diamond Scale motor assembly for it and
controlled it via a DCC motor decoder. Worked well. I'm in the planning
stages of scratchbuilding one in S-scale, for later this year.
If I were to *buy* one though, I would probably go with one from Custom
Model Railroads...

They make laser-cut acrylic turntable kits in HO lengths of 90, 105,
120 and 135 feet for prices in the 200 dollar range. I've seen an
unassembled kit at Trevor Marshall's place and it looks to be very
well engineered. A motorizing kit will add about another 135 dollars
to the price. Check out pages 5 and 6 in their HO kits section.
