One question. Why do you need a turntable to turn a 44 tonner that is inherently bidirectional? I know that there are other reasons to have a turntable and they could actually save some space on a micro-layout. It just seems strange to me to say that the turntable was to accommodate a 44 tonner.

There are plenty of articles in the model railroad press and on the internet to help you get started. Check out the Model Train Magazine Index and the magazine pdfs at Trainlife.com. I just started scratchbuilding a small turntable to accommodate one SMMW 44 tonner on my micro layout. A photo is in my Photos File: Photos > Matt H - S Scale Project Photos.
