Being in S scale for more years than I can now count, I remember well the
Frankel deal. It was written up in the S Gauge Herald and sounded almost too
good to be true.....and it was!
Bennett Locomotive did indeed start out with good intentions but very few
results. I had at one time some of their B&O cast boiler front "Capital Dome"
emblems which were very well done. My understanding was that they stopped work
on the 10 wheeler to focus on the wheelset shortage in S scale. They were
machining wheelsets one by one and mounting on axles. These also were very
nice. At what point the wheel production stopped and the ten wheeler production
didn't resume, I can't say.
Hill Country....yep, got stung by that too. The part that really frustrated
me was that I did some research on the validity of this operation. Talked to
several O scalers who had seen his work, finished steam locomotives. It was
even written up in one of the O scale magazines at the time as legit. The $200
I lost was a gift from my wife for would have been my first brass steamer, a
PRR M1a. She had given up some things she needed for me to get that engine. Of
course I eventually re-paid her several times over.
