I know most of you have Kadee, but the majority of my stock is AF/AF
compatable. I started looking up magnetics, wondering if there was a low cost
option out there that didn't involve a fortune. The most basic of
electromagnets is a nail wrapped in coated wire. Supposedly, the more times you
wrap around, the stronger it gets-and hotter. For the short duration you run
power thru the wire, this shouldn't matter. I used a strand from a CAT5 wire
and wrapped it around a 6D finish nail and hooked it up to an HO slotcar
wallpack, as my train is elsewhere. It's not strong enough, but close, so I
think a bigger nail and a bit more wire hooked up to a Lionel pack will work.
The bottom part of the AF coupler I am polarizing with a strong magnet. IF it
holds a magnetic charge, and it should, I'm thinking it'll work just fine. Has
anyone else goofed around with this? As long as all of the rolling stock's
couplers are polarized the same, inserting a nail here and there is an awe
inspiring way to add uncouplers to a layout. A 1 time investment in some good
quality magnets to 'charge' the bottom of the couplers is the highest cost, but
even that is cheaper than installing any 3 uncouplers I've ever seen. As this
is the beginning of my project, any back&forth is welcomed. Let's see how much
potential this has.
