To illustrate some of the difficulty in determining if stuff will run through
turnouts, I recently inspected a Lionel steam engine and found three different
flange sizes/contours on it. The tender had the largest flanges, the
pilot/trailing trucks had mid-sized flanges and the powered drivers had the
smallest flanges (and all the weight). I guess the lesson here is to check ALL
the wheels when contemplating something a bit non-standard with your track.
In the case described above, it would have been relatively easy to subsitute
other wheelsets in the tender and pilot/trailing trucks and then have a loco
that would darn near be a scale engine. Those flanges on the drivers were very
small (for AF) and appeared to be nearly the same size as scale flanges.
Unfortunately, I do not recall which Lionel loco this was.
Cheers...Ed L.
